About this spot
A museum unique to Itoigawa, located on the western edge of the Fossa Magna rift valley that divides the Japanese archipelago east and west. Many valuable minerals and fossils are on display, including one of the world's largest pieces of rough jade, allowing you to learn about the earth's formation that this region takes pride in. You'll also learn about the history of how Itoigawa became known as a jade-producing area, making it easier to spot jade-related stories during your later stroll through town.

日本海とヒスイの恵みに育まれた糸魚川市で開かれる夏祭り、糸魚川おまんた祭りは2026年8月8日(土)の開催です。市街地一帯が会場となり、「おまんた囃子」と呼ばれる軽快な音頭に合わせて、浴衣姿の踊り手が通りを練り歩く民謡流しが祭りの中心です。地元の人々をはじめ、観光客も気軽に踊りの輪に加わることができ、糸魚川ならではのあたたかい一体感を味わえます。日中に学んだヒスイや大地の歴史の余韻を残しながら、夜は町全体を包む祭りの熱気を存分に楽しみましょう。
Tips
会場周辺は交通規制がかかることがあるため、公共交通機関や徒歩でのアクセスがおすすめです。踊りの輪には飛び入り参加ができる場合もあるため、動きやすい服装で臨むと楽しめます。日本海に近く夜は風が涼しいため、羽織るものがあると安心です。
Tips
Admission fee required. From an outdoor observation plaza, you can also see views of the Sea of Japan and Oyashirazu. In summer, the outdoor sun can be intense, so remember to stay hydrated. Inside the museum, air conditioning keeps you cool, perfect for viewing exhibits.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. You can visit in the calm afternoon hours before the festival begins.
