An evening honoring Echigo's hero, Uesugi Kenshin, at the festival

About this spot

The 2026 Kenshin-ko Matsuri runs for three days (August 21-23) around the base of Kasuga Castle Ruins, known as one of Japan's largest Sengoku-era mountain fortresses. This festival honoring Uesugi Kenshin, Echigo's hero, traditionally features processions of armored warriors and events evoking the Sengoku period. As dusk falls and lights illuminate the castle ruins, families and locals gather to experience the unique atmosphere of a place so deeply connected to Kenshin. The first day offers a relatively calm atmosphere in which to enjoy the festivities.
