An ancient temple near the center of Maibara City, with the karesansui garden Seiganjji Garden spread in its inner grounds, created during the Edo period and designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The serene landscape woven by moss-covered rock arrangements and carefully trimmed plantings has captivated many through the seasons. Despite being in the city, it's a place where you can spend peaceful time, forgetting the hustle and bustle.

米原市の清滝山で、お盆の時期に山の中腹の松明に火が灯される伝統行事です。2026年は8月15日の16時30分頃からの点火が予定されています。麓の集落からは、夕暮れに浮かび上がる炎の姿がはっきりと望め、先祖の霊を送る送り火としての意味合いを持つとされています。近江の里山に古くから伝わる、静かで趣深い夏の締めくくりの行事です。
Tips
山の中腹での点火のため、麓の見晴らしのよい場所から鑑賞するのが基本です。周辺は道幅が狭いところもあるため、駐車場所には十分注意しましょう。日没後は足元が暗くなるため、懐中電灯があると安心です。
Tips
Within walking distance from Maibara Station. Admission fee required. The sitting room where you view the garden is a quiet place, so if you have small children, be mindful of noise levels.
Best time to visit
Takes about 40 minutes. The soft light from late morning to noon makes the garden appear most beautiful.
