Full-Scale Display of What May Be the World's Largest Kite

A museum preserving the tradition of Yōkaichi's large kites dating back to the Edo period, this facility displays what is considered the world's largest kite at full scale throughout its interior. Beyond the overwhelming impact of the actual-size kite itself, exhibits explain the history and techniques of kite-making, deepening understanding of the festival culture rooted in this region. As an indoor facility, it is ideal for taking a break during the hot afternoon hours.

東近江市の大徳寺で、地蔵盆の時期にあわせて行われる灯りの行事です。2026年は8月22日の18時30分から開催予定。境内に無数のろうそくや灯籠が並べられ、暗くなるにつれて幻想的な灯りの空間が広がります。地蔵盆は子どもの無事な成長や先祖への感謝を願う近江地方に根づいた伝統行事で、大きな音や派手さはなくとも、静かで温かい灯りに包まれる特別な夜を過ごせます。
Tips
境内や周辺の駐車場には限りがあるため、早めの到着が安心です。灯りを扱う行事のため、小さなお子さんには目を離さないようにしましょう。夜は虫が多くなるため、虫よけ対策もお忘れなく。

About 15 minutes by car from Gokashō Kondōchō. Many areas inside the museum permit photography, making it great for memorable photos.

Approximately 45 minutes. The calm afternoon hours allow for leisurely viewing.
