About this spot
The center of the Gokashō district, which produced many Ōmi merchants, Kondōchō retains a beautifully preserved townscape of merchant homes with white plaster walls, black board fences, and irrigation channels. Officially designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, koi swimming in the channels are a seasonal sight. This area breathes the spirit of "mutually beneficial" (sanpō yoshi) cherished by Ōmi merchants, a place where walking itself feels like stepping through history.

東近江市の大徳寺で、地蔵盆の時期にあわせて行われる灯りの行事です。2026年は8月22日の18時30分から開催予定。境内に無数のろうそくや灯籠が並べられ、暗くなるにつれて幻想的な灯りの空間が広がります。地蔵盆は子どもの無事な成長や先祖への感謝を願う近江地方に根づいた伝統行事で、大きな音や派手さはなくとも、静かで温かい灯りに包まれる特別な夜を過ごせます。
Tips
境内や周辺の駐車場には限りがあるため、早めの到着が安心です。灯りを扱う行事のため、小さなお子さんには目を離さないようにしましょう。夜は虫が多くなるため、虫よけ対策もお忘れなく。

About 15 minutes by car from Tarōbō Shrine. Some merchant houses are paid facilities offering interior viewing. Be cautious on pathways near the water channels, as footing can be slippery.
Best time to visit
Approximately one hour. The soft light of late afternoon beautifully illuminates the white walls and water channels.
