Arao Mudflats (荒尾干潟)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A mudflat boasting one of Japan's largest scales, with well-preserved natural environments valuable enough to be registered under the Ramsar Convention. When the tide recedes, numerous seabirds and creatures gather on the mudflats, and a peaceful landscape characteristic of the Ariake Sea spreads out. After physical activity at the amusement park, taking time to gaze at the expansive mudflat views provides a good break during your day. The mudflat's landscape changes dramatically with the tides, which is another of its charms.

Tips

If you walk on the mudflats, be careful as the ground is slippery. You can fully enjoy just viewing from a distance. Summer heat can be intense, so take breaks in shaded areas.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes required. The mudflat landscape is most expansive during low tide
