About this spot
An ancient shrine situated west of Nakamura Castle ruins and revered as the principal guardian deity of the Soma region. It enshrines Myoken, the protective god of the Soma clan, and is known as the shrine associated with the nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, the Soma Nomaoi festival. The main hall, auxiliary hall, and worship hall, constructed in the early Edo period, are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The shrine building that appears at the end of the cedar-lined approach, surrounded by towering trees, exudes an air of grandeur. True to its deep connection with horses, the shrine keeps a sacred horse in its grounds, and horse motifs adorn the ema (prayer plaques) and amulets, allowing you to feel the pride of Soma as a town of horses. During the Soma Nomaoi festival, the shrine is the center of sacred rituals where the commanding general's ceremonial departure takes place. There is no better starting point than this shrine to pray for your safe journey before beginning your drive.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from the Soma IC on the Joban Expressway; a free parking lot is available near the grounds. The approach is surrounded by trees with tree roots and uneven ground, so wear comfortable shoes. If you wish to receive a shrine stamp (goshuin), check the office hours in advance.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Morning prayers in the crisp air are refreshing, and the dappled light filtering through the approach is beautiful.
