About this spot

This mound in Nishikigi, Towada, Kazuno City, is linked to the legend of Nishikigi. A young man selling nishikigi (decorated wood) is said to have placed a bundle at the gate of Princess Masako's house every day for three years, but on the day he was just one bundle short of a thousand, he collapsed in the snow and died; the princess is said to have died soon after, following him. Taking pity on the two, the princess's father is said to have buried them together in a single grave as husband and wife, along with the thousand bundles of nishikigi, the origin of this mound. After your visit, have dinner as the sun begins to set before heading to the Bon Odori venue in Kemanai.

Tips

It's just a few minutes' walk to the Bon Odori venue. Restaurants can get crowded during the festival, so it's best to be seated by around 4 p.m. Whether food stalls will be set up varies by year, so plan to secure dinner along the town's streets.

Best time to visit

About 25 minutes. Dusk, when the evening sun lights up the earthen walls, is the most beautiful time to visit
