This historic Bon Odori dance is designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and counted among Japan's three great Bon Odori festivals. In 2026, it takes place over three days, from August 21 to 23, along Kemanai's Honmachi Street. A defining feature of this festival is that most dancers cover their faces with hats or hoods, so no one can tell who is dancing. Dancers form circles and quietly dance through the night to two tunes: the slow-paced Dai-no-Saka and the lively Jinku. Spectators can join the circle at any time, and actually dancing rather than just watching reveals the dance's deeper charm. Of the three days, the opening day tends to be relatively less crowded, making it an easier day for families to enjoy the atmosphere at a relaxed pace.
