This traditional event has long been passed down in the Oshima area of Tomioka City to send off ancestral spirits welcomed during Obon. In 2026, it takes place on Sunday, August 16, with the fires lit at 7:30 p.m. Fires are lit all at once on mountain slopes overlooking the settlement, and the sight of flames lining the darkness of night carries a quiet, solemn beauty unique to a rural mountain village, quite different from fireworks in a big city. On the same day, from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m., the Tomioka Fireworks Festival (about 1,000 fireworks, launched from Wago Park) is also held in the city. Though not large in scale, this event, kept alive for generations by the local community, is cherished as an important tradition marking the close of the local summer.

Tips

Information on food stalls could not be confirmed, so it's a good idea to have dinner in advance, for example at Michi-no-Eki Joshu Nanukaichi. There is little street lighting around the venue, so bring a flashlight and watch your footing. The same-day Tomioka Fireworks Festival will proceed in light rain but is cancelled in severe weather.
