The ruins of Hitachi Kokubunji, built by imperial edict of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period and designated as a national historic site. Foundation stones of the main hall and lecture hall remain across the vast former temple grounds, testifying to the deep history of Ishioka as once the center of Hitachi Province. Early morning visits mean fewer crowds and allow for a peaceful, contemplative experience viewing the ruins. This quiet atmosphere is perfect for starting the day before the festival begins.

常陸國總社宮を中心に、石岡市内各町内を舞台として繰り広げられる「石岡のお祭り(常陸國總社宮例大祭)」です。2026年は9月19日(土)から21日(月・祝)までの3日間にわたって開催され、このコースでは初日である9月19日を主役に据えています。関東三大祭のひとつにも数えられ、大きな幌獅子と数多くの山車が9時から21時まで市内各所を練り歩く、長時間にわたる賑やかな祭りです。朝に歩いた常陸国分寺跡や府中通りの町並みが、日中から夜にかけて祭り一色に染まっていく変化を、1日を通して見届けられます。屋台の出店状況は年により変わるため、食事は市内の飲食店で計画的にとるのがおすすめです。

Tips

祭り期間中は市内中心部が長時間にわたり交通規制となり、大変混雑します。公共交通機関の利用が安心です。祭りは朝から夜まで長時間続くため、こまめな休憩と水分補給を心がけましょう。幌獅子は大きな音を立てて動くため、小さな子ども連れは距離をとって見学すると安心です。
