The 'Takaoka-ryu Tsunabi Fire' is held at Takaoka Atago Shrine in Takaoka, Tsukubamirai City, starting at 7 p.m. on August 23, 2026 (Sunday). One of Japan's Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, the Tsunabi Fire is a traditional performance art from the Edo period where figures and mechanisms slowly move along ropes stretched between trees in the shrine grounds, powered by fireworks. The peaceful atmosphere of Kirakuyama Hanamokuyen and Itabashi Fudoson during the day transforms into a magical night spectacle, with the shrine grounds filled with families gazing up at the fantastical fire art. Since food stall availability varies year to year, finishing dinner at Michi-no-Eki Josho is recommended.

Parking space around the shrine is limited on festival day, so early arrival is recommended. As this is a fire-based traditional performance, follow the staff's instructions and view from designated areas. There may be many insects at night, so bring insect repellent.

From 7 p.m. start. The Tsunabi Fire is most magical when viewed in complete darkness after sunset.
