About this spot
Set at Takaoka Atago Shrine in Takaoka, Tsukubamirai City, the Takaoka-ryu Tsunabi is held from 19:00 on Sunday, August 23, 2026. It is one of the Tsunabi performances designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, a traditional art passed down since the Edo period in which fireworks power puppets and mechanisms that slowly move along ropes strung between the trees on the shrine grounds. In contrast to the calm daytime hours spent at Kirakuyama Fureai-no-Oka and Itabashi Fudoson, the shrine grounds come alive at night with families looking up at this fantastical fire performance. Since food stall offerings vary by year, it's reassuring to have dinner beforehand at Michi-no-Eki Joso.
