Experience Shimabara's summer tradition as spirit boats are sent to sea
About this spot
The 'Shimabara Oeshoro Festival' held at Takeshima Coast Release Site, Minato Shinchi Coast Release Site, and other locations in Shimabara City. In 2026, from 6 PM to around 9 PM on August 15 (Saturday), families walk to the coast while pulling hand-made spirit boats and setting off firecrackers to honor the deceased of that year. Known alongside Nagasaki City's Oeshoro festival, this is a traditional event unique to Shimabara. As the spirit boats move along the coastline facing Ariake Sea, with lights wavering in the waves, a unique atmosphere remains. This course is structured so that after exploring Shimabara's spring water and castle town during the day, you experience the main festival in the evening.
