Port town tradition - dancers in happi coats march in the Sodo Odori group dance

The 2026 edition runs from July 31 to August 2, celebrating the summer festival of Shimizu Port. On the first day starting at 6:45 PM, and from 6:30 PM onwards on subsequent days, the "Kappo Sodo Odori" group dance unfolds on Satsuki Street from in front of Shimizu Station to Minato Bridge. Dancers dressed in happi coats or yukata march to the upbeat rhythm of 'Kappo,' and spectators lining the roadside join in with clapping hands and cheers. The heat of the festival continues until 9 PM, creating an open and lively atmosphere unique to a port town.

Satsuki Street is crowded with spectators before the start, so it's recommended to arrive by 6 PM if you want a good viewing spot. Surrounding roads are under traffic control, so public transportation is recommended.
Best time to visit
From 6:30 PM start. From 7 PM onwards when the circle of dance expands is the most exciting.
