A grand drum festival where drum groups from each district compete at a port town

Held August 14-15, 2026, this summer festival of the port town of Shimoda centers on Shimoda Hachimangu Shrine. Drum groups from various districts throughout the city showcase creative performances, with the powerful sound of drums echoing through the streets facing the sea. Fitting for a port town with a history of Black Ship arrival, the competitive drum performances held in an open atmosphere represent a magnificent moment marking the end of Izu's summer.

Tips

The area around the shrine gets crowded with spectators before the event starts. If you want a good viewing spot, it's safer to arrive by around 4 p.m. Small children may be startled by the loud drum sounds, so watch carefully while viewing.

Best time to visit

From 5 p.m. opening. The latter half, when multiple drum groups gather together, is the most impressive.
