Worship at the Guardian Deity of Children: A Temporary Bridge Appears Only Twice a Year

Tsushima Shrine, nestled on a small island in the sea, has long been known as the "guardian deity of children." Only on the two festival days—August 4 and 5, 2026—is a temporary bridge constructed to reach the main shrine. During summer vacation, families from across the prefecture and beyond arrive to pray for their children's healthy growth, with visitors arriving from 6:00 in the morning until 22:00 at night. The sight of worshippers walking across the illuminated wooden temporary bridge to reach the island is a special experience available only these two days.

This shrine is accessible to the main shrine only during the period when the temporary bridge is constructed. The bridge has wooden planks—exercise particular caution with your footing at night. During the festival, surrounding roads are heavily congested; public transportation and temporary parking are recommended. Both daytime and evening attract large crowds of worshippers.

Best time to visit

Early morning worship is relatively quiet; evening brings more liveliness, especially with lantern lighting after dusk.
