Kamo Mitarashi Chaya (加茂みたらし茶屋), near the approach to Shimogamo Shrine, is a long-established teahouse said to be one of the birthplaces of mitarashi dango. The fragrantly grilled dumplings coated in a sweet-savory syrup offer a welcome sweetness for legs tired from walking. You can rest on the tatami seating and recharge your energy for the afternoon's water play. It is a spot just right for a family break, where you can taste a quintessentially Kyoto Japanese sweet.
Tips
It is within walking distance of the approach to Shimogamo Shrine. It can get crowded at lunchtime, so visiting slightly off-peak makes it easier to find a relaxed seat. Takeout is also available, so eating it at the park as a snack is another good option.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. Visiting slightly off lunchtime makes it easier to get a seat and is recommended
