A historical park on a hill in Matsudo, preserving the Tojo-tei Residence where Tokugawa Akitake, younger brother of the last Tokugawa shogun Yoshinobu, once lived. The lawn garden extending from the tatami rooms is a precious survival of its Meiji-era form, and sitting on the veranda gazing at it makes time flow more gently. Because it is on high ground, the townscape spreads out beyond the garden, and on clear days you can see far into the distance. Telling children it is the house of an important person from long ago makes it easy for them to take an interest, and the experience of tatami and a veranda itself stays in the memory. The adjoining museum also displays documents and photographs from the period.
Tips
It may be closed on Mondays, so check the opening days on the official information before you go. You take your shoes off to enter the residence, so shoes that slip on and off easily are convenient. Since it is on a hill, you will be walking uphill. Families with small children should allow extra time. There is little shade in the garden, so do not forget a hat and something to drink.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. The garden greenery is especially lovely on summer mornings
