About this spot

Kanasana Shrine (金鑚神社) is an ancient shrine designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, its main hall built in 1534, three bays square and roofed with shingles. Based on the worship of a sacred mountain, it is known for the unusual form of having no inner sanctuary behind the main hall, and its leafy precincts are wrapped in a quiet, composed atmosphere. Walking the approach and taking in the historic shrine buildings lets you begin the day in a solemn frame of mind. The precincts are surrounded by trees, so they stay relatively cool even in summer.

Tips

The precincts have stone steps and gravel paths, so visit in comfortable walking shoes. There can be many insects in summer, so insect repellent is reassuring. Resting at the nearby roadside station after your visit makes the next move smooth.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The morning, before the sun gets strong, is easiest for a shrine visit
