This small station on the JR Hanwa Line sits in the mountains of Hannan City, right next to Wanpaku Okoku. Cherry trees are planted along the tracks, forming a tunnel of blossoms in spring and a tunnel of green that blocks the sun in summer. This valley settlement is where a post town once stood along the Kumano Kaido, the old road from Kyoto and Osaka to Kumano, and it marks the entrance to a mountain pass leading into Wakayama. Walking the narrow path squeezed between mountains on both sides, you can sense from the scenery that this has long been a route for travelers. Use this walk to get a feel for the valley's terrain and history before playing in the park.
Tips
Trains on this line run infrequently, so if you're coming by train, check the outbound and return times in advance. The roads through the settlement are narrow and cars do pass through, so hold your children's hands while walking. Vending machines and shops are limited, so it's reassuring to bring drinks with you ahead of time.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. The valley is cooler to walk through before the sun climbs high.
