Oyahama Beach (大矢浜海水浴場)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A sandy beach with gentle waves in the centre of Hamajima-cho, Shima City. There are few people in the morning, which makes it ideal for walking slowly along the water's edge looking for shells and things washed ashore. In front of you the sea spreads out with fishing boats coming and going, and the view itself tells you how this town has lived alongside its fishing industry. Making friends with the sea before the afternoon's rock-pool play helps even children who are wary of water get in more easily. It is close to Umi Hoozuki, so the distance is just right for the first stop of the morning.

Tips

The morning sun may be soft, but the glare off the sand is strong, so do not forget a hat. Outside the swimming season there are no lifeguards, so keep to wetting your feet at the water's edge. Check that any shells you pick up have no creatures inside before taking them home. The trick with this course is not to swim seriously here and to save your energy for the rocks in the afternoon.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Early in the morning, when there are few people, is recommended
