Kyoto Gyoen Demizu-no-Ogawa (京都御苑 出水の小川)

About this spot

Demizu-no-Ogawa in Kyoto Gyoen is an artificial stream about 100 m long, fed by well water pumped up from underground. It is only a few centimeters deep, a gentle flow where even small children who fear water can get used to it little by little, starting at the ankles. The official information describes it as a popular spot for children playing in the water in summer, and it is a signature place for children in the garden in summer. Restrooms and rest benches are provided nearby, so parents can set their bags down and sit, which helps a lot. In a typical year the water flows year-round, the grounds are open all day and admission is free; the 2026 water-flow period has not been announced.

Tips

Many of the paths inside the garden are gravel, so bringing comfortable walking shoes in addition to water sandals makes getting around much easier. Shade is limited to the areas under the trees, so bring a picnic sheet and hats for sun protection. Use the nearby restrooms to change, or bring a towel poncho for a smoother job. Places to buy drinks inside the garden are limited, so bringing plenty with you is the safe choice.

Best time to visit

Arrive at 13:10 and you can spend the hot part of the afternoon in the water, playing at a relaxed pace until around 16:00 as the sun drops.
