About this spot

An old shrine in Ogi that stands on a mountain slope beside the Gion River (祇園川). The approach is a steep flight of stone steps running straight up, and once you reach the top, the townscape of Ogi and the Saga Plain spread out broadly from in front of the main hall. For children the steps are a small challenge, and the sense of achievement on reaching the top becomes a memory in itself. The grounds are wrapped in trees, and in the morning the air is cool and pleasant. The Gion River flowing at the foot of the hill is known as a home of fireflies, which connects to the name of the day's main attraction, the Jabujabu Firefly Pond.

Tips

The stone steps are narrow and steeply pitched, so always walk on the handrail side and hold hands with small children as you climb. Easy walking shoes are the safe choice. There is no shop in the grounds, so prepare drinks before you set out. Ogi Park is only a few minutes away by car, so getting this done early in the morning makes the rest of the day flow easily.
