Kakurin-ji (鶴林寺)

Kakurin-ji (鶴林寺) is an ancient temple in Kitazaike, Kakogawa-cho, Kakogawa City. Because both its Main Hall and its Taishi-do are designated National Treasures, it is also called the Horyu-ji of Harima. The old buildings are spread out generously across the wide precincts, so even children who want to run around can walk without feeling cramped. Old wall paintings remain inside the Taishi-do, and the treasure hall gathers together the Buddhist statues and documents handed down at the temple. The stature of the buildings here makes it clear that Kakogawa was long one of the centers of Harima. Touching on Kakogawa's history before heading to the seaside water-play spot gives the day's memories more depth.

Tips

Admission is charged, and the Main Hall with the Taishi-do and the treasure hall are handled separately (check the official website for the latest fees and viewing hours). Much of the grounds is gravel path, so wear comfortable walking shoes. It is not impossible to walk from JR Kakogawa Station, but a car makes the day's movements much easier. Agreeing with your children in advance that this is a place to be quiet will put your mind at ease.
