About this spot

Hyakudan-en Garden (百段苑) at Awaji Yumebutai (淡路夢舞台) is a garden famous for its design by Tadao Ando, with 100 flower beds arranged in terraces along the slope. As you climb the steps one at a time, the flower beds in front of you and the view of Osaka Bay behind you appear in turn, and the panorama opens up the higher you go. Knowing that this land was once cut away for landfill and then brought back to life with greenery gives the scenery far greater depth as you walk. It sits right beside Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park (国営明石海峡公園), so it is easy to spend the morning here and then move on into the park. Climbing during the cool morning hours is recommended.

国営明石海峡公園じゃぶじゃぶ池は、遊具エリア「夢っこランド」の隣にある水遊び場です。公式に「じゃぶじゃぶ池の利用は、4月〜10月です」と案内されており、例年4月1日(水)から10月31日(土)まで、時間は公園の開園時間に準じます。噴水やウォーターガンの仕掛けがあるので、ただ水につかるだけでなく、水を出したり浴びたりして自分から遊びをつくれるのが子どもには楽しいところ。夏だけでなく春から秋まで開いているため、暑さの落ち着いた季節に足をひたしに行くこともできます。利用には公園の入園料が必要ですが、中学生以下は無料なので、子ども連れの負担はほとんどありません。隣が遊具エリアなので、水と遊具を行き来しながら長い時間を過ごせます。

Tips

開園時間は季節によって変わるので、出かける前に公式サイトで確認してください。着替えの設備は限られるため、水着は服の下に着ていき、バスタオルを一枚多めに持っていくと困りません。ぬれた服を入れるビニール袋を人数分用意しておくと帰りが快適です。園内は広いので、駐車場から水遊び場までの経路を先に確かめておくと荷物運びが楽になります。日ざしの強い時間帯は木陰で休憩をはさみ、こまめに水分をとらせましょう。

Tips

There are many steps, so with a stroller either enjoy the view from below or choose a route with ramps. There is little shade, so always carry a hat and drinks. Comfortable walking shoes make the steps much easier. You do not have to reach the top; enjoying the view partway up and turning back is a perfectly good option.
