About this spot

A botanic garden located between Sapporo Station (札幌駅) and Odori (大通), where a forest that predates the settlement era has been preserved just as it was. The grounds are spacious, and old-growth trees canopy overhead, so the air feels cool even in the height of summer. There are also wooden buildings from the Meiji era and exhibits on the region's northern peoples, making it a place where you can trace the origins of the city of Sapporo together with your children. Even on a day when you want to save your energy for the afternoon's water play, walking in the shade feels pleasant. It's within walking distance of Odori Park (大通公園), which is a relief since you won't tire yourself out getting there.

Tips

Opening periods and hours change by season, so check the official website before you leave. Much of the garden has gravel and dirt paths, so comfortable walking shoes are best. It's possible to go around with a stroller, but the deeper parts of the forest have uneven terrain, so a baby carrier is reassuring to have. The shop is small, so bring drinks with you in advance.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The morning, before the sun gets strong, is the coolest time to walk.
