The Toyohira River Green Space Water Play Area is a free waterside in the Toyohira River Green Space in Chuo-ku, Sapporo (near Minami 11-jo Nishi 1-chome). The opening period for 2026 has not been announced; in past years it has fallen within the summer holidays. It lies within the green space spread along the banks of the Toyohira River, and its greatest charm is the wide sky and sense of openness that a park in town cannot offer. There are no tall buildings around, so the breeze passes through and the coldness of the water feels all the better. It is within walking distance of Nakajima-koen Station and Horohirabashi Station on the subway, so it is easy to visit on a whim, which is an advantage particular to Chuo-ku. Spread a mat on the grass of the embankment and you can stay there in comfort until evening.

Tips

There is little shade on the riverbank, so be sure to bring hats, sun protection and plenty to drink. The water level of the river changes with the weather. On days when it is raining upstream or the water is high, stay away and check the situation for the day before you set out. The ground is stones and gravel, so water play sandals are essential. There are few places to change, so a towel or poncho you can throw over yourself is handy.

Best time to visit

Starting at 1:30 p.m. lets you take your time until evening, when the sun weakens.
