The Toyohira River Green Space Water Garden (left bank downstream of Munich Bridge) is a free water play facility in the upstream district of the Toyohira River Green Space in Sapporo. It is usually open from Monday, June 15 to Tuesday, September 15, from 9:00 to 17:00 (the City of Sapporo lists it as mid-June to mid-September). Built like a shallow channel, the flow is gentle, so even small children can start playing where the water is only ankle-deep. A grassy field on the riverbank spreads right beside it, so you naturally fall into a rhythm of playing and then resting on a mat when tired. The long season, running from early summer through the lingering heat of September, is a strength no other water play spot here can match. Because it stays open until 5:00 p.m., the most pleasant hours are when the sunlight softens.

Tips

The river level depends on the weather. On days when it has rained upstream or the water is high, stay away and check the conditions before setting out. There is little shade, so sun protection and plenty of drinks are essential. There are stones underfoot, so have children wear water play sandals. Changing spaces are limited, so a towel or poncho that can be thrown over the shoulders is handy.

Best time to visit

Arrive at 1:30 p.m. and you can play for a full three hours or more until it closes at 5:00 p.m.
