About this spot

A science museum in central Tomakomai with free admission. The greatest highlight is the Mir Exhibition Hall, which displays the backup unit of the Russian space station Mir (ミール), letting you see up close the internal structure of a craft actually used in space development. Inside there is also a planetarium and hands-on exhibits where you can check how things work, so you can spend a comfortable visit whether it rains or the day is hot. Many exhibits can be understood by pushing and turning rather than reading difficult explanations, so even preschoolers can go around without getting bored. It is just the right way to spend a morning on a day when you want to save energy for water play in the afternoon.

あけの公園水遊び場は、苫小牧市の明野地区にある無料の水遊びスポットです。例年6月1日(月)から9月7日(月)まで、9:00〜18:00に開放され、苫小牧市の案内では「6月初旬〜9月初旬」と紹介されています。水深の浅い水遊び場なので、歩き始めたばかりの子でも足をひたして遊べるのが最大の魅力。まわりは住宅街の中の公園で、大人は木陰から見守りながらゆっくり過ごせます。利用は無料なので、時間を気にせず気が済むまで遊ばせてあげられるのも家族連れにはうれしいところです。日が長い北海道の夏は、夕方になっても明るいまま遊び続けられます。

Tips

天候や清掃により開放が変更されることがあるため、出発前に苫小牧市の案内で当日の状況を確認してください。着替えの場所は限られるので、水着を服の下に着せていくと現地での支度が楽になります。日陰は木の下が中心なので、日差しの強い日はワンタッチテントやレジャーシートがあると休憩しやすくなります。18:00に終了なので、17時半ごろから片づけを始めると余裕をもって帰れます。
