Umi-no-Eki Puratto Minato Market (海の駅ぷらっとみなと市場)
About this spot
A market gathering the local catch, right beside Tomakomai fishing port. Tomakomai is known for having Japan's largest catch of surf clams, and with seasonal shellfish and fish laid out at the storefronts, children's eyes light up just from walking through. Inside the market there are eating places where the day's seafood is served as rice bowls, curry or set meals. For children who dislike raw seafood, some shops offer grilled dishes or soups, so it is easy for each family member to put together what they like. It is only a short drive to Kita-Futo Green Space (Kirakira Park), which also makes this an easy base for the day.
Tips
Lunchtime gets crowded, so arriving before 11:00 makes it easier to get a seat. Some shops are easier to use with cash, so having small change ready keeps things smooth. Raw seafood spoils easily in the car, so on a day with water play it is safer to stick to eating only. Freshening up in the market's restrooms before moving on keeps preparation at the park short.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes. An early lunch in the second half of the 10:00 hour avoids the crowds.
