This city-run science museum inside Makomanai Park (真駒内公園) takes salmon as its theme. Its highlight is the chance to follow, tank by tank, the life of the salmon that return to the Toyohira River (豊平川) — eggs, fry and adults in order — with displays that present it as the story of a river close to home, easy for children to grasp. Outdoors there are rearing ponds where you can watch the fish while feeling the flow of the water up close. Admission is free, so it is an easy way to spend a morning hour. Slotting it into the morning of a water-play day links the themes of water and living creatures across the whole day.

Tips

The museum has regular closing days, so check the opening days and hours on the official website before you visit. The outdoor rearing ponds get strong sunshine, so a hat is reassuring. Using the Makomanai Park (真駒内公園) car park lets you move straight on to a walk in the park.
