The Nishino Ryokudo Greenway Stream, along Nishino Ryokudo Greenway (西野緑道) in Nishi-ku, Sapporo, is a free water-play spot where a shallow channel runs beside the promenade. In 2026 it is open at all times from Monday, June 1 to Wednesday, September 30, and because there are no set hours, you can drop by in the middle of a walk. The water is shallow, so even small children can wade in on their own. Unlike a pool-type water play area where you stay in one spot, the charm of a stream is that you can play while walking along the flow. Shade from the row of trees continues along the way, so it stays cool even on hot days. It is free, which also suits a short visit.

Tips
The channel bed is slippery in places, so have children wear water-play sandals. On some days the water does not flow because of weather, water temperature or cleaning work, so check the City of Sapporo information page for that day before you set out. The promenade is used as a local road, so watch out for bicycles and pedestrians. Places to change clothes are limited, so bringing something to put on over your clothes is reassuring.
