Auto Resort Tomakomai Alten Asonde Pond is a shallow-pond water play area inside the resort grounds at the foot of Mt. Tarumae (樽前山). Tomakomai City's information lists the open period as year-round, but water play is centered on the summer season. Use is free, and the water is shallow enough that even a child who has just started walking can stand on their own feet and play. Surrounded by forest, there is plenty of shade, so you can stay out of direct sunlight even in midsummer, which is a great strength of this place. A campground, hot spring, toilets and parking are all on the same grounds, so you never lack a place to change or rest and can stay the whole day. Being able to step into the hot spring right after playing and then head home is hard to arrange at other water play areas.

Check with Alten's information before you set out whether water play is possible. Parts of the pond bed are left natural, so having children wear sandals for water play protects the soles of their feet. It is in the forest, so bring insect repellent. After getting out, either take a hot-spring bath or change clothes so your body does not get chilled. Checking the route from the parking area to the pond first makes loading and unloading much easier.

Best time to visit

Enter from 13:30 and you can play for three hours until evening. The afternoon, as the shade lengthens, is comfortably cool
