The Mitarubetsu Riverside Green Space Water Play Area (三樽別河畔緑地水遊び場), in the Mitarubetsu Riverside Green Space in Teine Ward, Sapporo, is a free shallow water play area fed by flowing river water. In a typical year it opens from around Wednesday, July 1 to around Monday, August 31, and its great feature is that there are no set time slots, so it can be used at any hour. The City of Sapporo gives the season as 「early July to late August」. Because the river water is used just as it is, the water temperature is lower than in a pool filled with tap water, and the hotter the day the better it feels. The water is shallow enough for small children to walk in on their own, but do not forget that this is a natural waterside, so an adult must always watch from close by. Admission is free, and it also works for a short stop during an evening stroll.

Tips

There are stones on the riverbed, so always have children wear water play sandals. After rain, or while it is raining upstream, the volume and cloudiness of the water can increase, so do not push it and come back another day.
