About this spot

This is a ferry across the Edogawa River (江戸川) linking Matsudo City with Shibamata (柴又) in Tokyo's Katsushika Ward. Instead of an engine, a boatman rows it, and once you reach midstream the sound fades away and only the sense of flowing water remains. The crossing takes only about ten minutes, but for children the experience of 「riding a boat」 itself becomes a big memory. You approach the landing by walking along the Edogawa embankment, so a stroll in the morning river breeze comes with it. The ferry has been a means of transport since the Edo period and still carries people to and from Shibamata on the opposite bank.

Tips

Service depends on the weather and on river levels, so check the operating status before you set out. Fares and operating hours can also change, so give priority to the information provided on the day. There is little shade on the embankment, so walking with a hat and drinks is safer. The plan assumes you take the same ferry back, so ask about the time of the last boat when you board and your schedule will not fall apart.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes including waiting time. The morning, while the river surface is still cool, is recommended.
