About this spot

A memorial hall in Nagareyama Honcho (流山本町) that restores a merchant house grown wealthy from mirin brewing. It is named after the haiku poet Kobayashi Issa (小林一茶), who visited many times and built a friendship with the master of the house. The building is designed so that you can look out at the garden from the tatami room, and sitting on the veranda lets you feel a little of the slower pace of the Edo period. The building and garden are compactly laid out, which is a real help when you have small children in tow. Old buildings still stand here and there along the surrounding streets of Nagareyama Honcho, so even a short walk tells you about the history of the town.

Tips

There are closed days, so check the opening days in the official information before you go. You will step up into tatami rooms, so shoes that are easy to slip on and off make things simpler. The surrounding streets are narrow and parking space is limited, so park according to the signs. The garden has plenty of shade, so it stays cool even on a summer morning.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. It is at its prettiest on a summer morning when the garden greenery is deep
