Shiki-no-Ogawa Stream (Shiki-no-Hiroba Plaza) at Shiki-no-Sato Park Roadside Station in Wakayama City is a shallow man-made stream running through the middle of the plaza. The City of Wakayama introduces it by saying that the Shiki-no-Ogawa stream flowing through the center lets you enjoy the waterside in every season, and in summer it becomes just the right place to cool off with your feet in the water. You can also observe medaka rice fish, dragonflies and aquatic insects, so children can move between water play and creature hunting and stay a long while. Admission and parking are both free; barbecues, the hands-on farm and similar activities cost extra. The grounds also have a zip line, bouldering wall and slide on Miharashi-no-Oka hill and the Tsukiyama play area with equipment for younger children, so when they tire of the water there is the playground, and when they tire of that, back to the water: children can keep playing at their own pace.

The water-play season has not been officially announced, but the stream flows year-round and the park itself is open 24 hours. Water conditions can change with the weather or maintenance, so judge whether to go in by looking at how things are on the day. Footwear that protects the feet, such as water shoes, is reassuring so nobody cuts a foot on the streambed or pebbles. Once you have observed a creature, return it to where you found it. Since the market and restaurant are inside the park, you can make up for forgotten items to a fair extent on the spot.
