About this spot

This is an old temple standing partway up the mountain, within a corner of Hokedake Park (法華嶽公園) in Kunitomi Town. Enshrining Yakushi Nyorai as its principal image, it has long drawn the faith of people as a temple for healing illness. The approach, wrapped in deep trees, stays cool even in midsummer, and as you climb the stone steps you'll forget the heat of town. The temple grounds open onto mountain scenery, and visiting first thing in the morning lets you especially appreciate how clear the air is. Since it's in the same park as the Jabunko Plaza you'll play at in the afternoon, there's no travel burden, so children's energy isn't wasted moving between spots.

Tips

There are stone steps and slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Some sections are difficult for strollers, so a baby carrier will make it easier to move around. Mosquitoes appear in the mountains, so applying insect repellent beforehand makes it more comfortable. This is a place for quiet visits, so agree with your children beforehand not to run around.

About 50 minutes. Recommended early in the morning when the air is clear and cool.
