About this spot

This library is built as one with the station building of Etchu-Funahashi Station (越中舟橋駅), a design that is rare anywhere in Japan. Walk out of the ticket gate and the space lined with bookshelves spreads out in front of you, so opening a book while waiting for a train is part of everyday life here. Large windows look onto the platform and the trains, so even a child with little interest in books will let the time pass happily watching the carriages. Although the village has a small population, the collection is substantial and a generous space is given to the children's section. It is a place that could only exist here, where you can see that this is the heart of daily life in the smallest village in Japan.

Tips

Check the opening days and hours in advance. This is a library, so it is a place to spend time quietly; telling small children beforehand makes things go smoothly. If you come by train, the nearest stop is Etchu-Funahashi Station (越中舟橋駅) on the Toyama Chiho Railway (富山地方鉄道), and you arrive the moment you step off. If you drive, check where the nearby car parks are. It is only a short trip from here to Orange Park Funahashi.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Spending the morning indoors before the sun gets strong is the most comfortable plan.
