This historical museum introduces Yamagata from medieval to early modern times, centered on materials related to Mogami Yoshiaki, lord of Yamagata Castle. Real helmets, swords and letters are on display, and history seen in textbooks suddenly feels close at hand. The exhibition rooms are compact, so even families with small children can go all the way around while concentration lasts, which helps a lot. Standing right beside Kajo Park (霞城公園), it leads naturally into the castle ruins walk that follows. Being indoors, it is also well suited to summer, letting you pass the sunny morning hours in comfort.
