Shingen-zutsumi Park (信玄堤公園)

About this spot

Shingen-zutsumi, spreading along the Kamanashi River (釜無川) in Ryuo, Kai City, is an embankment said to have been built by Takeda Shingen to control a river that flooded again and again. Today it is laid out as a park, and you can walk beneath the pines that line the top of the embankment while watching the current up close. It is more than a walking path: devices for weakening the force of the water remain here and there, making it a place where you can show children how people once lived alongside a river. There is plenty of shade, so the morning is a cool time to walk. Close by stands Sansha Shrine (三社神社), enshrined to protect the embankment, where the area's history is still alive today.

Tips

Visiting is free and a car park is provided. The riverside is dangerous when the water rises, so stay away after rain. Choosing shaded paths keeps it comfortable even in summer, but insect repellent is reassuring.
