The Fudo Denshokan Sugiura Clinic in Showa Town (昭和町) is a facility that opens a Western-style clinic building erected in the Taisho era to the public as a museum, just as it was. Together with the consultation rooms and instruments of the time, you can learn about the endemic disease (Japanese schistosomiasis) that once afflicted this region, and about the physicians who devoted themselves to overcoming it. The building is a nationally registered tangible cultural property, and the wooden staircase, frosted-glass windows and other details preserve the atmosphere of the Taisho and Showa eras. The theme is a little difficult for children, but the story that the people living here joined forces and wiped out a disease comes across plainly. The garden is well kept, and you can take a break in the cool shade of the trees.

Viewing is free. Please check the facility's information for opening days and hours. It is a place to view quietly, so if you have small children, planning on a shorter visit takes the pressure off. There is a parking lot.
