A community-rooted local railway connecting Kurashiki's city streets to the industrial district of Mizushima. Short trains rumble along at a leisurely pace, and the way the view outside the window shifts from residential streets to factory pipes and tanks becomes an unexpected highlight for children. Since freight trains also run on this line, if the timing is right you might even encounter a powerful locomotive. Stand behind the driver's cab and you can keep watching the tracks stretching out ahead. The ride itself becomes part of the fun on the way to your destination, a way of getting around unique to this town.

Tips

Check fares and timetables in advance through the official information. This isn't a high-frequency line, so it helps to check the return time as well beforehand so your schedule doesn't fall apart. If the train gets crowded, you may need to fold up a stroller, so having a baby carrier is reassuring. There's little shade on the platform in summer, so time your arrival to avoid a long wait for the train.
