Yata Otsuka Burial Mound (箭田大塚古墳)

About this spot

A round burial mound from the late Kofun period in Yata, Mabi-cho, Kurashiki City, designated a national historic site. The highlight is the corridor-style stone chamber built up from enormous stones; look in at the entrance and air so cool it makes the heat outside seem imaginary comes flowing out. Standing before the real thing, even adults are startled to think how stones of this size were carried and stacked more than 1,300 years ago. The surroundings are a quiet settlement, and the very fact that an ancient site survives right beside a residential area speaks to the depth of this land's history. It can be seen in a short visit, making it a perfect stop to open the day.

倉敷市真備町の「まびふれあい公園親水広場」は、西日本豪雨からの復興のシンボルとして2024年に開園した公園にある、無料の水遊びスポットです。設計を手がけたのは建築家の隈研吾氏で、木を生かした造りと川沿いの景色がなじむ、新しくて気持ちのよい空間になっています。小田川の堤防沿い約4.5haの敷地には、親水広場のほかに遊具広場、芝生広場、火気の使える「じゆうひろば」が並び、家族それぞれの過ごし方を選べるのが大きな魅力。水に入って涼み、乾かしがてら遊具で遊び、芝生でごろりと休むという流れを、移動なしでくり返せます。川とともに歩んできた町が、また川のそばに人が集まる場所を作ったという成り立ちも、子どもと話してみたいところです。

2026年の親水広場の稼働期間は未発表です。例年は夏休み期間なので、出発前に倉敷市の案内で当日水が出るかを確認してください。堤防沿いで日をさえぎるものが少ないため、帽子と日焼け止め、レジャーシートやポップアップテントを用意すると休憩が楽になります。じゆうひろばで火を使う場合は、利用のきまりを事前に確認しましょう。増水時や大雨の後は川沿いの安全が確保できないことがあるので、天候が荒れた日は無理をせず日程を変えてください。着替えとタオル、濡れた服を入れるビニール袋は人数分そろえておくと帰りが楽です。

Tips

Whether you can enter the stone chamber varies by day and by maintenance conditions, so follow the on-site signage. The ground is earth and stone and can turn muddy, so wear shoes you do not mind dirtying. A torch lets you see deep into the chamber and completely changes how children react. The local roads nearby are narrow, so if you come by car it is reassuring to check where you can park in advance.
