Kibi no Makibi Park (吉備真備公園)

About this spot

A park laid out in honour of the Nara-period scholar Kibi no Makibi, who also gave Mabi-cho its name. Sent to Tang China as an envoy, he brought back a great deal of knowledge including calendrical science and military strategy, and the grounds hold a statue depicting him along with explanatory panels on his connections to the area. Even if the details go over children's heads, simply knowing that a person the town is named after once lived here brings a small sense of pride. The open lawn is just the right size for spreading a picnic sheet and eating lunch. Take your time over the meal to get ready for the water play in the afternoon.

倉敷市真備町の「まびふれあい公園親水広場」は、西日本豪雨からの復興のシンボルとして2024年に開園した公園にある、無料の水遊びスポットです。設計を手がけたのは建築家の隈研吾氏で、木を生かした造りと川沿いの景色がなじむ、新しくて気持ちのよい空間になっています。小田川の堤防沿い約4.5haの敷地には、親水広場のほかに遊具広場、芝生広場、火気の使える「じゆうひろば」が並び、家族それぞれの過ごし方を選べるのが大きな魅力。水に入って涼み、乾かしがてら遊具で遊び、芝生でごろりと休むという流れを、移動なしでくり返せます。川とともに歩んできた町が、また川のそばに人が集まる場所を作ったという成り立ちも、子どもと話してみたいところです。

Tips

2026年の親水広場の稼働期間は未発表です。例年は夏休み期間なので、出発前に倉敷市の案内で当日水が出るかを確認してください。堤防沿いで日をさえぎるものが少ないため、帽子と日焼け止め、レジャーシートやポップアップテントを用意すると休憩が楽になります。じゆうひろばで火を使う場合は、利用のきまりを事前に確認しましょう。増水時や大雨の後は川沿いの安全が確保できないことがあるので、天候が荒れた日は無理をせず日程を変えてください。着替えとタオル、濡れた服を入れるビニール袋は人数分そろえておくと帰りが楽です。

Tips

Shade is limited to the stand of trees, so a picnic sheet or a pop-up tent makes breaks much easier. Assume there is nothing on sale to eat or drink, and prepare your lunch and drinks beforehand. As a rule, take your rubbish home with you. Entering the water right after eating puts a strain on the body, so working in a break at Mabi Fureai Center next sets a comfortable pace.
