Mizu no Hiroba Water Plaza sits in the outdoor area of Iwate Kodomo no Mori (Iwate Prefectural Children's Center) in Okunakayama, Ichinohe Town, Ninohe County. Alongside the Jabu Jabu pond for water play there is a waterfall curtain that pours down from above and a raft floating on the water, giving a range of play that goes well beyond simply getting in. Charging under the waterfall curtain and coming out soaked from head to toe is a classic for children, while the raft offers the fun of moving it yourself. Admission is free (excluding some paid play equipment and campsite fees), so the whole family can easily spend a day here. Playing at the waterside in the clear highland air has a freshness particular to northern Iwate.

Tips

Opening hours are 9:00 to 17:00, and the closed day is Tuesday (the following day when Tuesday is a public holiday). The opening period for Mizu no Hiroba has not been announced; in past years it has opened during the summer holidays. Always check the facility's latest notices for the opening status before you set out. Time is needed for changing and packing up before the 17:00 closing, so getting out of the water by 16:30 is reassuring. To avoid slipping on the pond floor or the raft, prepare footwear that protects the feet, such as water shoes. For whether children still in nappies may enter the water, follow the on-site notices. The highland cools quickly once the sun drops, so do not forget a layer to throw on and a good towel. Please take your rubbish home with you.
