Hayatani Shrine (速谷神社)

Located in Kamihera, Hatsukaichi, this shrine has been revered since ancient times as the guardian shrine of the old province of Aki. It is especially known as the deity of traffic safety, and people come from all over Japan to have their cars blessed. The tree-lined approach stays cool even in summer, and its stillness is perfect for a morning stroll. The grounds are spacious, and walking them with the sound of stone steps and gravel underfoot makes for a fresh experience for children too. Offering a prayer at the start of the day has a way of settling the mind, which is part of what a shrine is for.

Tips

You may visit freely, but check the reception hours of the shrine office in advance. There are stone steps on the grounds, so with a stroller it is easier to stick mainly to the level approach. Mosquitoes are around in summer, so insect repellent makes the visit more comfortable. There is a parking area, but it can fill up at times with cars waiting for blessings.
