About this spot

A castle standing on Shiroyama hill in Kawanoe-cho, Shikokuchuo City, also known as Butsuden Castle (仏殿城). Climb to the keep and the Hiuchi-nada Sea (燧灘) spreads out before you, while on the opposite side you can see the townscape lined with paper-mill chimneys. What makes it interesting is how Kawanoe's geography, a long narrow strip of land squeezed between sea and mountains, becomes clear at a glance from above. The route up Shiroyama has slopes and steps, so it is best to climb in the cool of the morning. Starting the walk after looking down on how the town came to be makes the story of the paper town you visit next far easier to absorb.

Tips

Admission fees and opening hours can change, so please check the official website for the day's information. Shiroyama has many steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Some sections have little shade, so be sure to bring a hat and drinking water.
