The Shumoku Area Stream in Niigata Prefectural Toyanogata Park is a free spot where you can play in an artificial river that runs through the park. The opening period has not been announced; the only official notice concerns the operation of the stream. For 2026, pump operation is announced to resume on Saturday, July 18, and from August 1 to August 31 the operating hours are extended from around 9:00 to around 17:00. The flow is shallow enough for small children to wade across, and how you play is up to you, whether catching the force of the water with your hands or walking from upstream to downstream. Right nearby are the Trim Forest playground, the main plaza, and the multipurpose plaza, so you can switch to dry-land play when you tire of the water and go back in when you get chilly. Rubber sandals for playing in the stream can be borrowed at the Shumoku Information Center.

Tips

The stream does not run when it rains. Be sure to check that day's operating status on the park's official website before you set out. Since the opening period has not been announced, advance confirmation is especially essential for a visit during July. Outside August the operating hours can be shorter, so allow extra time for your arrival. The streambed is slippery, so have children wear rubber sandals or similar footwear rather than going barefoot. Changing spots are limited, so a towel or simple poncho you can throw over yourself is handy.

Arrive at 14:00 and you can enjoy a good 2 and a half hours within August's operating hours
