Nagaoka Municipal Science Museum (長岡市立科学博物館)
About this spot
This museum introduces the nature and history of Nagaoka City in one place. From the landforms created by the Shinano River (信濃川), the rocks and fossils found in the surrounding mountains, and the plants and animals living in this region, to tools excavated from archaeological sites, you can follow step by step how the land of Nagaoka came to be. The scale of the exhibits is just right, small enough that even families with young children can stay focused to the end. The air-conditioned building is also an ideal refuge in which to spend a midsummer morning. Learning here first what kind of terrain the Senshu park you will play in later stands on changes the way the scenery looks.
Tips
Please check closing days and opening hours in advance. During the summer holidays, events such as craft workshops may be held, so it is worth checking the day's schedule at the entrance. The next stop, the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art (新潟県立近代美術館), is only a short drive away.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 30 minutes. The morning right after opening is the calmest time to look around
